Advice to help you pass the ADI Part 3 Instructional Ability test.
Before the test
- You might like to read the ADI 1 document. It gives the rules for SE's to follow for Part 3.
- Make sure your lesson plans are up to date, and ready to use
- Try to have an early night, the night before so you will wake up feeling refreshed
- Make sure you're dressed tidily, and you car is clean inside and out
- Arrive on time

The test
- Try to be calm, relaxed and focussed;
- Be positive and composed;
- The Supervising Examiner (SE) will be aware that you will be nervous and tense;
- If you do get tense, its because your brain is being starved of oxygen, so take a long deep breath and refresh your thoughts, your not doing a marathon;
- Try to remember what you've been taught;
- Listen carefully to the SE when he/she's briefing you on the Pre-set (PST) topics;
- Be prepared for the SE to be erratic and unpredictable when in learner mode;
- You must treat the SE as you would a real learner;
- Don't be afraid to ask the SE about their faults;
- You must keep control of the lesson. You must not let the SE take control until they are satisfied;
- Don't ask the SE to do something, TELL THEM;
- Try not to under instruct on phase 1;
- Avoid over instructing on phase 2;
- Don't be afraid to pull the SE over into the kerb to discuss a point, if it's going to take more than a couple of seconds to explain;
- Do use the dual controls or steering if necessary;
- You must cover the core competencies - Identification, analysis and remedy;
- Don't forget to debrief at the end of each phase;
- Be prepared for the SE to ask you 'awkward' questions;
- Make sure your answers are correct and not misleading information;
- You may find that the SE will try to help to some extent, if you're on the right track.
