Here are some more examples of Q & A techniques for your ADI Part 3 Test or driving lesson.

Review page 1 Q & A techniques

Example 1 - Wrong gear

The car is chugging along in 4th at 20mph. You could say to examiner, drop into 3rd please.
Fault spotted and corrected. But no learning took place?
Better way would be to ask.

Why do you think the car feels a bit sluggish?
He would most probably say: " Im in too high a gear".
Same result but learning took place rather than just doing as told.

If you got reply that he didn’t know why the car felt sluggish then time to q and a a bit more in depth.
It could be as easy as
Why does the car feel a bit sluggish?
Dunno?
What gear are we in?
4th.
What gear should we be in at this speed normally?
3rd.
Well done, so select correct gear.
Learning took place.

He may well reply dunno again? But that’s the game.
You Q and A till he gets its right.

If you cant rectify quickly. Above example not really more than a few seconds to say?
Then you will need to stop and explain more fully. Gears , ratios etc. But I cant see that happening in this example. Too basic?

When trying to analize a fault you wont go far wrong if you remember that a fault is not made just to annoy you.

It is usually because:

(a) Lack of practice. (He just isn't very good, and needs to practice more)
(b) Lack of knowledge. ( He hasn’t been told)
(c) Lack of understanding .(He doesn’t know how to relate what he has been told )
Don’t confuse b and c. They are totally different.
With b he doesn’t know because he hasn’t been told. Whereas in c he has been told but doesn’t understand.
The difference may be subtle but absolutely crucial.

You could be flogging a dead horse thinking that he understands something because in Q and A you discover he has been told something.

There are many, many examples of this. If you've given driving lessons, see if you can think of any times where assuming that pupil has been told something he understands it.
Go on don’t be shy.

How about he's too close to kerb and shaving cars?

During Q and A you discover that he knows correct distance.

Q How far should you try to keep from kerb or cars when possible?
A. My other instructor told me I should be about 3ft and if its tight I have to go slower. I think I was told, less space less speed and if in doubt wait.
So the learner has obviously been told? They gave a pretty good answer and deserves a well done.

But the learner has just buggered up your theory?

So it has to be lack of understanding?
They know, but do they understand?
No point now carrying on about 3ft? Or doorways and look at what you want to hit type stuff. He knows all this.
Where do we go from here?
Q. So you know that we are meant to be about 3ft away when possible?
A Yes.
Q. How far away do you think you are?
A 3ft.
Q can you show me with your hands what you think 3ft looks like?
A. Yes, (holds hands apart about a foot 18in.
Do you get the point?
Your learner has been told but not given an example and therefore did not fully understand.
So to remedy help to understand what 3 feet is. By example. park 3 feet off kerb open door and make sure your learner not only knows its 3 feet but understands what 3 feet is.

Example 2. - Changing direction

Keeps pulling out in front of following cars.
Stop for this cos its too dangerous to try and correct on move as you were nearly hitting things.
Q Did you see that following car?
A Yes? Of course
Q Why did you pull out?
A Cos I did msm.
Q Did you realize how close he was?
A Yes, my other instructor told me all about judgement and speed.
So what didn’t he understand? The SE is really good at msm and judgement.
Where do you go from here?
Q If you saw the car in you mirror before you pulled out? Then why did you pull out?
A. Cos I'd done all the right stuff? I mirrored, I signalled and so I went. Its my right to. My mate says its ok.
Q What do you mean, its your right to?
A If I signal to pull out then following cars have to let me out. I know cos my mate told me and hes had his full licence for 7 months now and only written off 2 cars.
So your learner knows to check they can judge . But he doesn’t understand the priority.
Remedy is to explain how he must act upon what he sees and he must not cause following traffic to slow

I hope that these Q & A pages have given you some idea on how to perfect your techniques.
